Moving overseas for a new job?
Congratulations on landing a new job abroad! Whether your existing company is asking you to relocate or you’ve been head hunted from overseas there are a number of things to consider.
Before you go it’s good to check your legal rights. Will your employment contract be a UK one or a ‘local’ one? Even if you’re going abroad as an employee for a UK-based firm your employment rights may change. Working hours, annual holidays and public holidays will probably vary too. And don't forget to tell HM Revenue and Customs you will be working abroad.
Things to also consider when looking at the package you’ve been offered include:
- Will your spouse be able to work?
- How much will the salary really be worth when you consider the cost of living in your new city?
- What currency will you be paid in?
- Will you receive an allowance for travel back to the UK or help with school fees?
- Will the company provide a relocation service or will you have to arrange this?
- What would happen if you left the job - could you legally find another job locally and how easy would this be?
